Extension Information

We strongly urge you to make sure that you are finished and ready to post before your posting date. If you cannot make your posting date for any reason, please let us know! We will work with you; please don't just disappear. Should you need an extension, email us at least 24 hours before your posting date; we will not accept extension requests made on your posting date. You must be confident that you will be able to finish your work with an extension, as you will only be allowed one extension. The extension will apply to your entire team.

We understand that due to unexpected issues, you may need to ask for an extension. If that becomes the case, please include the following:

  • The writer's current Big Bang fic draft. This is so that we are aware of how far you have to go, and can check whether significant progress has been made since the first draft submission made.

  • An estimation of how much time your team needs to be able to post. Please note that small edits for typos and such can be done after your posting date, but you do need to post a finished product.

  • The reason your team is asking for an extension. This helps to contextualise your situation and will also aid mods in planning future events.

Please note that your team cannot ask for an indefinite extension, and only one extension will be granted per team, so make sure you are as clear as possible about how much time you will need to finish.

If you fail to contact us and do not work with your partner(s) to post on time, you will be considered as a defaulting participant, and the penalty for this is a year-long ban from all collaborative and exchange events run by the Cap-IM community. This penalty will only apply to the defaulting member of the team, not the team as a whole.

If you have any questions or require clarification on something, please let us know by emailing cap.im.events@gmail.com.

We can't wait to see everyone's work!

2019 Cap-Iron Man Big Bang Posting Instructions

It's almost time for Big Bang posting! All scheduled posting dates will be emailed out to everyone, and a full posting calendar is available here.

Big Bang stories and accompanying artwork should be completed, formatted, and ready to post by your posting date.

Each participating writer and artist will upload their own fic or art individually. Remember to link to your partner's work when your team has posted, and acknowledge the hard work they've put into this collaboration!

All works must be posted on your scheduled posting date by midnight, Pacific Standard Time. If something comes up, contact the mods and we'll be able to make arrangements to ensure your work is posted on time. A challenge-fulfilling fic should be posted all at once, and it should be complete as a stand-alone. Anything extra a participant might want to post after their posting date can be done at their own leisure. Extra works will only be included in the Challenge Masterlist if posted before the end of the Big Bang posting period, and a link must be sent to mods so that the works can be added easily.

Posting Day Checklist:
  1. Post your completed work to AO3 (both art and fic!).

  2. Add your work to our 2019 Cap-IM BB collection (alternatively, post directly to the collection by clicking on the link and then the "post new work to collection" button).

  3. Optional cross-posting to other platforms.

  4. Add links to your team's work(s) on your BB post(s) once they too have posted.

  5. Submit your DW masterpost to the [community profile] cap_ironman community.

POSTING YOUR WORK

ARCHIVE OF OUR OWN
All works are required to be posted as unlocked works AO3 for longevity and accessibility reasons. This includes artwork.

Here are some options commonly used when posting a Big Bang collaboration:
  • Inspired By — The writer creates an AO3 work for their fic, and the artist posts their art to AO3 separately as a work inspired by the fic. This is a good option if your team prefers not to embed the artwork into the story.

  • Co-Authors — Creating a single AO3 work with both the artist and writer listed as co-authors, with the artwork embedded into the story.

  • Author's Note — The writer and artist(s) link to each other's works at the top of their AO3 work and describe the association in their own words without using an AO3 function (or in addition to it).

If you need to make an AO3 account, please request an invite here and keep in mind that it might take a few days for you to get it and be able to create the account. If you run into trouble, contact the mods at cap.im.events@gmail.com ASAP so we can sort out an invite.

When posting your work onto AO3, be sure that it is in our 2019 Captain America/Iron Man Big Bang collection. You can do this by either posting the work directly to the collection, or by manually adding "2019_Cap_Ironman_Big_Bang" in the Post to Collection / Challenges field in the Associations section when posting your draft.

For help on AO3 posting, from embedding images to posting in a collection, please check out our AO3 Guide for Cap-Ironman Events.

WRITERS:
Please be aware that depending on the writing program you are using, your word count may be different from AO3's when posting. Mods will be going by AO3 for the 25,000 word minimum, so make sure your fic meets that requirement.

Important tip: if you have created a draft of your fic, please make sure that you change the date to your posting date before you click post, otherwise your AO3 posting date will be the date you created your draft and readers looking at the feed by date might not see it.

ARTISTS:
For art, do not host your artwork on a site where it can easily be deleted, requires special access, or use a link that can be broken. For this reason, we ask that you do not rely on Tumblr to provide the permalink to your artwork.

POSTING THE MASTERPOST (REQUIRED)

On your chosen posting day, ONE member from your entire team is required to make a masterpost to the main Dreamwidth community. Writers, if your fic was claimed twice by two different artists, you will be expected to coordinate with both of your artists and include both of their works in the masterpost.

Please use the following form:

Art thumbnails or banners are allowed in your post, but not required. Please make sure all thumbnails are SFW (safe for work). If you are opting to post artwork directly to the community, you are welcome to do so, but please make sure the image is under a Dreamwidth cut and, if necessary, warn appropriately for content:

Please tag your masterpost with the following: challenge: big bang, fanart, fanfic, genre, rating, universe and all team members' usernames. Usernames are in the format x: USERNAMEHERE. If someone on your team doesn’t have a tag, please make a note of it in the text of your masterpost and a mod will get right to it!

You can find all of the community's existing tags here and additional posting guidelines if needed.

In case none of your team members have a Dreamwidth account, you can either set one up and make your master post, or you can contact the Big Bang mod team by emailing cap.im.events@gmail.com and send them the required information before your posting date. Your masterpost will then be published on your behalf using the mod account.

CROSSPOSTS

If you'd like to share your fic or art on other social media platforms, please make sure to indicate that it is a work for the Cap-Iron Man Big Bang Challenge and link to your partner's work(s) in the post.

If posting on Tumblr, be sure to tag your post with #capimbb or #capimbb2019 within the first 5 tags so the mods will be able to find it, or email us a rebloggable link to guarantee that it'd be reblogged. Please note that we'll be queueing the posts as we see them, so it may take a couple of days for them to be shared on our blog. If your post features art, we will only reblog SFW (safe for work) posts: we encourage you to post a 'safe for work' crop with a link or cut to the full version.

Remember this is a collaborative event; we will not reblog Big Bang works that do not link to the accompanying fic or art.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please let us know by emailing cap.im.events@gmail.com!

2019 Cap-Iron Man Big Bang Date Claims Information: CLAIMS CLOSED

The Cap-IM Big Bang Date Claims are coming—it's time for you to decide on a posting date! Come back to this post to claim your date on Saturday, October 26th at 17:00 EDT (what time is this for me?).

Date claims will run differently from last year's challenge. We listened to the comm's informal feedback last year after trying something new, and are returning to our usual form of coordinating date claims.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

By claiming a posting date, you are committing to having your work complete and ready for posting by the date you have picked; this counts as your check in for the BB. If your team does not claim a date by October 28th, 17:00 EDT, we'll assume your team can reasonably post on any date, and will assign your team to a date accordingly.

We will not grant any pre-emptive extension requests at this time. Extensions will be considered only after posting dates are claimed. We strongly encourage all participants to meet their posting deadline, and only ask for an extension as a final resort. If you believe you won't be able to finish your work by next month, please communicate your concerns with your partner(s) and the mods as soon as possible.

Incomplete works, failure to meet the deadline, or a complete lack of communication on and after your posting date will result in a ban. Bans are done individually and not as a team; participants who have completed their event work will not be held responsible for the actions of their partner(s). For further details on bans, read through the Defaulting and Participation Eligibility policies.

HOW TO CLAIM YOUR DATE

30 posting dates are available from November 1 to November 30. Only one team will be posting on any given day so that all of your brilliant new Stevetony content is staggered for people to enjoy!

Before picking your date preferences, please make sure you have discussed this with your partner(s). If you have multiple partners (if a work was double claimed), you are required to have all the work posted on the same date by midnight, PST, so make sure the dates you pick will work for everyone on the team. Only one member from the team should claim a date; make sure you coordinate and figure out if there are any dates that absolutely will not work for you and your teammate(s), and be prepared in case you are unable to pick your initial choices.

Date claims will be done through a Doodle poll, which only needs to be filled out once per team. Please use your Team Name when picking dates; this was the writer's CODENAME during claims, and is given to you at the top of your Date Claims Information email.

Claims are made on a first-come first-serve basis, and each team is limited to one claim. Be prepared with alternatives in case you are unable to pick your initial choice, and make sure you communicate if there are any dates that absolutely will not work for you and your teammate(s). Only one person need claim on behalf of their team.

If you have any specific requests regarding your chosen dates, please let the mods know on the poll, or through email. Please note that we cannot guarantee to accommodate all special requests, and will address them on a first come, first served basis.

2019 Cap-IM BB Date Claims are closed

The link will be provided here and through our usual social media channels, so please check back again next week to claim your date! Remember, you must choose your dates within that 48 hour period, otherwise you will be assigned a posting date by the mods. If you or your partner(s) are unavailable during that time, you may use a proxy or contact the mods for help.

On October 28th, teams will receive an email with their scheduled date and additional information regarding their deadline. A calendar of all teams and their posting dates will be provided once all the posting dates are scheduled.

WHAT TO DO ON YOUR POSTING DATE

On your scheduled posting date, your team is responsible for uploading your story and artwork(s) individually, then having one member of the team make a masterpost on the Dreamwidth community. Be sure to read the posting instructions that will go up on the [community profile] c_im_bigbang DW and be emailed to you after date claims have happened.

All posts must be made before midnight, Pacific Standard Time on your posting date.

Do not post your work early. If something comes up and you won't be able to upload your work on your posting date, you must contact the mods at cap.im.events@gmail.com as soon as possible and we can make arrangements.

2019 Cap-Iron Man Big Bang Second Claims - CLOSED

NOTE: SECOND CLAIMS ARE CLOSED.

This is the CLAIMS phase of the Big Bang, and where the artists come in! An amazing 17 drafts have been submitted and are awaiting artists to claim them. By claiming a story, you assert that you will collaborate with your writer(s) to produce custom artwork to accompany their story when posting begins in November. There is no penalty-free dropping out after this point. You do not need to be a member of the [community profile] cap_ironman community or have a Dreamwidth account to make your claim. Anonymous comments on this post are enabled. (Commenting will open when the claiming phase begins).

Your schedule:
  • October: Artists work on their piece, writers finish their fics

  • Saturday, October 26th: Teams select posting dates in November

  • November: Big Bang fic and art begin posting!

A recap on some of the main rules:
  • Please remember to read through our General Event Policies and the Big Bang Event Guidelines for all participants, as well as the Artists’ Guidelines for this year’s challenge before going on to claim any fics.

  • Acceptable art includes traditional and digital art. Other visual mediums—such as edits, manipulations, fanvids or works that rely on or are derivative of existing material—are not eligible for this Big Bang.

  • You are required to make, at minimum, one piece of accompanying fanwork for the fic you claim, and can make as many pieces as you'd like. The artwork(s) must be new and made solely for the story in question.

  • This is a collaborative challenge; you are expected to keep in touch with your team for the duration of the challenge. You must coordinate with your partner during the posting period.

  • All participants must be 18 or older.

To claim a summary on Saturday, September 28th, you will need to leave a comment with the following information (just copy and paste in your own details):

Two or three options are recommended as we cannot guarantee that you will get your first choice. However, you may include more if you wish or even list just one choice if there is only one summary you are interested in. Remember that you are signing up for a collaborative event—please do not list summaries that you would not be genuinely happy to work with.

Claims will be made on a first-come, first-served basis and you will be assigned the first option that is still available in your list. For the first hour of claims, only NEW Big Bang participants will be able to claim - after this, claims will open to everyone, and double claims will be allowed. This is to give everyone who couldn't be there for claims opening a chance to claim something as well. Remember that participants are allowed a maximum total of two signups to the Cap-IM Big Bang, which includes both art and fic.

Writers, remember that artists have different schedules and timezones, and that though we try to accommodate everyone, your fic may not be claimed in the first few hours. Please be patient, and don’t look at claims as a competition This challenge is about pairing like-minded creators who will work together to produce exciting new Steve/Tony content; sometimes it takes a while for the right person to come along!

Artists, if the claim time is inconvenient for you, we encourage you to find someone who will put in a claim for you by proxy. All your proxy has to do is comment on the claims post instead of you when the time comes, providing your username, email and claims as set out above in this post. If you do not already know someone who can do this for you, you can email the mod team (cap.im.events@gmail.com) for assistance in finding a proxy.

When matching is complete, we will send out emails to connect artists with their writers, along with further instructions. This might take a while, as making a mistake at this crucial stage is something everyone would like to avoid; please don’t panic if you don’t receive an email immediately. NOTE: After you receive the email, PLEASE RESPOND DIRECTLY CONFIRMING you have received the information. Please wait until you have replied to this email before contacting your partner. After confirming the assignment email has been received, it is the artists’ and writers’ responsibilities to open communications with team members and keep in touch for the duration of the collaboration.

A word about warnings: Many of these stories include strong language, substance abuse, sexual situations, violence, etc. We limited warnings here to the big stuff. If you have a specific concern and would like the mods to vet a story draft before you make your choices, please let us know at cap.im.events@gmail.com.

Please send any questions or things to cap.im.events@gmail.com, especially if we've made a mistake with your summary.

On to the Summaries! )

2019 Captain America/Iron Man Big Bang Event Guidelines

This is where everything begins for the [community profile] cap_ironman 2019 Captain America/Iron Man Big Bang! Running since 2011, the Cap-Iron Man Big Bang challenges writers to create fics, then artists are invited to create accompanying art!

What is a Big Bang?
A big bang is a collaborative event between writers and artists, meant to encourage the finishing of longer fic. Writers draft a story which then goes to claims, where artists choose a story to create an accompanying artwork for, and they post the finished works together as part of the event.

How does it work?
Writers create Steve/Tony-focused stories with a minimum of 25,000 words. During the writing phase, writers will work on a draft of their story and then submit it along with a summary. Drafts must be a minimum of 20,000 words, or 80% of word count at the time of submission. There is no formal sign up period. All a writer needs to do to be signed up is to submit a draft by the deadline. All an artist needs to do to sign up is claim a story during claims period.

During the claims phase, all the summaries will be assigned a code name and posted anonymously. Artists will then claim a fic for which they want to create an accompanying art work.

During the collaborative phase, writers and artists can work together as much or a little as they want to brainstorm ideas and cheer each other on. We'd like to remind you that the Big Bang is not about artwork being "commissioned" to the exact specifications of the writer, but inspired by the fic that is claimed and based on the collaboration itself.

During the posting phase, teams will post their completed fanworks together on the same day. At the end of the challenge, we will prepare a Masterlist of all created works.

What does the collaboration involve?
Every collaboration will be different — that's part of the beauty of signing up as a writer or claiming a fic as an artist! The Big Bang is a fun new opportunity to create wonderful Steve/Tony fanfic and accompanying artworks, and have a fantastic time working together to various degrees. The level of communication and collaboration between team members is to be negotiated amongst themselves, but at minimum all participants must communicate clearly with their partners during the important stages of the challenge such as after claims and before date claims and posting, and let partners know if there will be times when they are uncontactable. It's crucial to be able to compromise and take each other's feelings into account.

When it comes to posting, your entire team will do so on the same day following the posting instructions sent to you. As part of the challenge, team members will acknowledge their partner(s)' hard work and creations. Some people choose to do this with an AO3 function (inspired by or gift), others use a hyperlink in the Author's Note. It is a requirement that all embedded work is credited, and that all team members are recognised equally.

But 25,000 words is intimidating!
Not to worry! There is still a lot of time in the writing phase and a lot of resources available. We will be holding creator workshops where creators can discuss their works, brainstorm ideas, work through tricky plot points and get the support they need. There is also a whole community of enthusiastic Steve/Tony fans out there ready to support and cheer. Maybe you’ve had that one fic idea you’ve always wanted to write but you never have. This is the chance to take that on and make it happen! Sometimes the deadline and collaboration are exactly the kind of motivation you need to see a project through to the end — even if this is longer than any work you’ve written so far!

I’ve never written Steve/Tony. / I have never written any fic ever!
Then now is a good time to start! Remember, at one point, every single creator was someone who had never made their own work before. If you feel inspired and want to create, then we want your work. Any idea, any Steve/Tony canon, any AU — as long as it’s Steve/Tony focused, we want it. And just think, after this, you won’t be saying “I have never written a fic before” and instead you’ll be saying “I wrote this fic and it was an accomplishment!”

What if I don’t manage that many words after all?
From now till the draft submission deadline in late September, you can work on your draft and see where it goes, get cheerleaders, plus talk to other creators privately to get tips and figure out where your draft is going. Until you submit a draft to us, you’re not committed to anything. So have a go! If by the draft submission deadline you’re confident you can finish your fic, send in your draft! If you feel the draft didn’t come far enough to be submitted, you will still have more words in a draft document than you had before you started out, and are that many words closer to finishing your awesome Steve/Tony work! You can post in your own time, or if you like, you can always keep working on your draft for next year's Big Bang challenge.

I want to write but I don't know what to write about.
Never fear, the community is here! Check out our Prompt Post. You can also drop off your own prompts if you want.

So, now that you’re convinced that participating is a fantastic idea, read on for some very important logistical information…

  • You must read all of the guideline carefully. Some rules have been altered from previous years, and you are responsible for reading and understanding all of the guidelines listed below.

  • This challenge is run by the cap-ironman community and it’s a Steve/Tony fest, so we’re looking for art and fic with a focus on the relationship between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in any context and in any setting or continuity you can think of.

  • We don’t allow pre-formed teams or tandem sign-ups, and we expect all participants to be open to working with new people. We also can’t guarantee that a particular author and artist will be paired together as the claiming process is partially anonymous and first-come, first-serve. When you sign-up, be open to constructively work with anyone.

  • This is a collaborative fest, you are expected to keep in touch with your team for the duration of the fest. You must coordinate with your partner during the posting period.

  • All participants must be 18 or older.

  • If you have any questions regarding this event and submissions, please contact us through email at cap.im.events@gmail.com.

If you're signing up as a writer, please read through the GUIDELINES FOR WRITERS page for information on draft submissions and more.

Please note:From this year onwards, we do require that both the finished fics and artworks are submitted to our event collection on AO3, for longevity and accessibility reasons. If you need to make an AO3 account, please request an invite here and keep in mind that it might take a few days for you to get it and be able to create the account.

After the claiming period and all creators are teamed up, the BB mods will be sending out additional information and event updates through email, in addition to posting on the [community profile] c_im_bigbang community and Tumblr. Please make sure that you check your email regularly once you've joined the event.

If you need a space to talk about your progress, ask questions, look for resources, or more, check out the Creator Workshop posts! It's a long writing period from now until November, and the key is to keep focused and motivated.

We also want to take the time to remind everyone of our affiliate Big Bang challenge, [community profile] marvel_bang!

Marvel Bang has been running successfully for a number of years. It is open to all stories set in a canon of the greater Marvel universe or focused on Marvel characters and pairings. The minimum word count is 10k.

So if you have an idea for a story that doesn't quite fit our Big Bang requirements, but still want to sign up for a BB challenge, here's your chance! There's a place for stories of all shapes and sizes in fandom, so do not give up on any idea you want to run with!

Writer signups remain open until June 1st, and you can have a look at this year's guidelines here.

2019 Cap-IM Big Bang Guidelines for Writers

Guidelines for Writers

  • Remember to read through our General Event Policies and Big Bang Guidelines for All Participants, as well as the writer's guidelines outlined below.

  • Completed stories must be a minimum of 25,000 words. There is no upper limit, but fic can’t be a work-in-progress at the time of posting.

  • Your fic must be an self-contained story written specifically and exclusively for the Cap-Iron Man Big Bang and therefore can't be a sequel to an existing fic or a part of an existing WIP that has been posted online. If you have an unposted WIP that has not been shared (in full or in part) anywhere, then it's eligible as a Big Bang entry if it fits all the other requirements.

  • You can sign up alone or as part of an writer team (minimum word count remains the same).

  • To enter the 2019 Big Bang, you must submit a draft of at least 20,000 words prior to the sign-up period closing after it is no longer September 25th anywhere in the world.

  • Fics need to be complete by the beginning of November and ready for posting by your team’s posting date. The entire story needs to be posted on your chosen date.

  • Even if you finish early, do not post your story or any portion of it anywhere before the posting date. Doing so will disqualify you from the Big Bang.

  • There is no penalty-free dropping out after your summary has been claimed by an artist. When you send in a draft be sure that you’ll be able to finish in time to post.

  • If you don’t have an idea for a story to work on yet, you might want to check out our prompt post and browse the ideas that people would like to see in fic.

  • Because writing a long fic can be daunting business, we invite you to make use of our Creator's Workshop posts!

  • As you're working on your story, please keep in mind that summaries are posted anonymously during claims (see the Claiming Process section) and we urge you to be tactful during the pre-claim period.

Draft Requirements and Submissions

To officially enter the 2019 Big Bang, you need only submit a draft by the deadline. Submitted drafts must be mostly complete by the sign up date, including an outlined ending so that after claiming, your artist has a clear idea of where you’re taking the story. When you send in a draft we need you to be sure that you will be able to finish and post your story at a posting date in November, because from this point on you are collaborating with someone.

As a rough guideline you should have about 80% of your drafted story written by then, but the important thing is that you feel confident you can finish the story in time.. Drafts need to be at least 20k of the required 25k word count. Drafts of less than 20k will not be accepted. It is fine if you have skeleton scenes, parts that still exist in outline form, or scenes that are not more than a sentence in your outline as a placeholder, but the majority of your draft needs to be prose. Remember, your artist will read and work from your draft, and needs something to go on.

Drafts are due by the end of Wednesday, September 25th (what time is this for me?). You can send in a draft at any time from now until submission closes.

Because this is a collaborative event, there is no penalty-free dropping out after your fic has been claimed. You sign up to finish the story. If you run into trouble let us know as soon as possible. We'll see what we can do. If you need to drop out, you must do so before September 28th (the claiming date); dropping out after your work has been claimed will be considered defaulting on the challenge and will result in a ban.

We are expecting a rough draft that you are still working on; it doesn't have to be perfect. However, we do encourage that writers have their stories beta read before posting, so it might be a good time to check out our list of active Steve/Tony beta readers after you submit your draft to us.

You do not need a title at this time. Titles won't be used in the claiming process.

To submit your draft, email us at cap.im.events@gmail.com and write "BB 2019 ROUGH DRAFT" and the username you want to sign up with as the subject line. Don't forget to attach your draft file. We prefer .ODT, .DOC, .DOCX, .GDOC and .RTF format, but we can handle just about anything. Please also name your draft file to include your username.

In the body of your email, include the following information:

Please keep the length of your summary to 200 words or less. It can be as detailed or spoilery as you like. Be honest and straightforward; artist claims will be based entirely on summaries. If you're unsure how to write a good summary for the matching, we have a How to Write A Big Bang Summary Guide.

Be clear and thorough about trigger and content warnings so that artists know what they are signing up for. You must put any and all warnings in this version of your summary, even if you choose to use an "author chooses not to warn" label later. We don't want anyone to be unhappy with the match, so please warn for common triggers like noncon, dubcon, excessive or graphic violence, underage sex, incest, character death, or anything else that might be potentially problematic for a reader.

Claiming Process

After you submit your draft and it's been approved by the mods, it will be available for claims on September 28th. Claims are done anonymously. Artists will be claiming stories based solely on the summary and details you provide for your fic. Out of fairness to all participants and stories, please don't advertise which story you wrote.

We don’t allow pre-formed teams, and we expect all participants to be open to working with new people. We also can’t guarantee that a particular writer and artist be paired together as there will be a random element to the claiming process.

If claims go quickly, a second round of claims will be opened to give more artists a chance to participate. This means that your BB story will potentially be 'double claimed' — claimed by two artists — and you'll be coordinating with two partners/teams. We cannot guarantee that every fic will be double claimed. If you'd like to opt out of having your work double claimed, please let the mods know when you submit your draft.

If you are double claimed, you will collaborate with two artists as a team of three that posts on the same day. The artists can work independently of each other or choose to co-produce artwork, but that's up to them, and there must be a minimum total of two artworks created for your fic.

We understand that if you are double claimed, you may enjoy working with one of your partners more than the other. However, if you cannot value them both and recognise their works equally in public, we respectfully request that you do not put your work up for double claiming.

Creation Period and Posting

Once your work has been claimed and you've been teamed up with an artist, all that's left is to finish your BB fic and keep in touch with your partner(s)! The posting period begins in November, and mods will send out an email to all participants when it comes time to pick your team's posting date.

Please note: From this year onwards, we do require that your fic is submitted to our event collection on AO3. If you need to make an AO3 account, please request an invite here and keep in mind that it might take a few days for you to get it and be able to create the account. If for any reason you do not receive an invitation through the queue and it’s already close to your posting date, please contact the BB mods and we will provide you with an invite code. You are welcome to crosspost your work, but you must provide an AO3 link for your Team Masterpost.

Writer FAQ

What kind of fics qualify?

This challenge is run by the [community profile] cap_ironman community and this is a Steve/Tony fest, so we’re looking for fics with a focus on the relationship between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in any context and in any setting or continuity you can think of.

In pre-slash fics, secondary pairings should be kept to the background and the focus should be clearly on Steve and Tony and their interactions, relationship, friendship, etc.

If there is romance, then the focus should be clearly on the Steve/Tony relationship. Relationships that feature a character who is neither Steve or Tony are not allowed to be the main focus of your work. For example, Steve/Tony/Tony is allowed to be the main dynamic in your work, but secondary pairings, a relationship that features Steve or Tony, or Steve/Tony/other character are not allowed. If other pairings are included, they should also be in the background.

Other Steve- and/or Tony-pairings can all feature in the background or during the set-up of the story, but should not be the focus of the story’s main plot. The Steve/Tony content and the Steve/Tony pairing/pre-slash/gen relationship should be the main point of your story and the “endgame” relationship.

What does "endgame" mean?

Does it mean they have to be together at the end? Not exactly. If Steve and Tony's relationship is the only dynamic explored in your Big Bang story, then they do not have to be "together" at the end of your work. However, if your fic features multiple relationships, then the endgame or "goal" of your story should be exclusively Steve/Tony.

For example, the following type of story would not be allowed in the Cap-Iron Man Big Bang:
  • A story where the first 90% is Steve/Tony and their breaking up, only for them to end up with other characters as their true loves.
  • A story where the main relationship at the end is Steve/Tony/other character.

The following types of story would be allowed in the Cap-Iron Man Big Bang:
  • A story where 100% of the story concerns Steve/Tony and their breaking up and subsequent unhappy ending.
  • A story that ends with Steve or Tony dying, and the other is left to pine and grieve for his one true love and regret missed chances.
  • A love triangle where Steve and Tony finally realize they are the only ones for each other and the romantic trouble gets resolved as Steve/Tony, with Steve and Tony's relationship at the forefront of the fic.

If you have any questions, they may already be answered in our Big Bang FAQ post or the Cap-IM General Event Policies page. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact the BB mods at cap.im.events@gmail.com!

2019 Cap-IM Big Bang Guidelines for Artists

Guidelines for Artists

  • Remember to read through our General Event Policies and Big Bang Guidelines for All Participants, as well as the artist's guidelines outlined below.

  • Acceptable art includes traditional and digital art. Other visual mediums — such as edits, manipulations, or works that rely on or are derivative of existing material — are not eligible for this Big Bang.

  • You are required to make, at minimum, one piece of accompanying fanwork for the fic you claim and can make as many pieces as you'd like. The artwork must be new and made solely for the story in question.

  • In addition to this, you are required to create a story banner for the fic you claim. The banner can be a SFW crop of the artwork; a banner made up of a crop of the art which includes fic title, author(s) and artist; or a specially made banner for the accompanying fic. Full details will be given in the posting instructions.

  • All art must be finished by your team's posting date.

  • NSFW ("not safe for work", content that contains explicit or adult content) artwork is allowed but must be accompanied by a SFW ("safe for work", appropriate for a general audience) thumbnail preview during the posting period.

Claiming Process

To participate in the 2019 Cap-IronMan Big Bang as an artist, all you need to do is claim a summary on September 28th. There is no prior sign-up available or required.

Claims will be done on a first-come, first-serve basis. Summaries are posted anonymously. You must claim a story based solely on the fic summary and details provided. Writers are instructed to be as transparent as they can when providing details on warnings, other featured characters/relationships, etc. Instructions on how to claim a story will go up with the preview of fic summaries on September 26th.

In case you can't make a claim personally on the 29th, you are allowed to ask someone to make a claim on your behalf (a proxy claim). If you're having trouble finding a proxy, please get in touch with the mods and we'll arrange one for you.

Because this is a collaborative event, there is no penalty free dropping out once you've claimed a work. Dropping out once you've been partnered up will be considered defaulting on the challenge and will result in a ban.

Creation Period and Posting

Once you've claimed a work and you've been teamed up with a writer, all you have to do is make accompanying fanart for your partner's BB fic, and remember to keep in touch with them throughout the event! The posting period begins in November, and mods will send out an email to all participants when it comes time to pick your team's posting date.

Please note: From this year onwards, we do require that artwork is submitted to our event collection on AO3.

Before inserting an image into your work, please note that AO3 does not host images; this means you cannot upload an image directly to AO3. Instead you must upload it elsewhere and retrieve a direct image link once you do. (A direct image URL ends in .jpg, .png, .gif, etc.) We advise using a free image uploading service such as Imgur, or even using Dreamwidth's file uploading service (but please keep in mind that you have limited space on DW). We strongly encourage you not to host your image on Tumblr, as these links are liable to break.

If none of these options work for you, please contact the mods at cap.im.events@gmail.com and we will work with you to host your art on one of the Cap-IM accounts. For more information about embedding art into AO3, please see our AO3 Guide for Cap-IM Events.
